This restaurant on Garrick Street takes its name from the Japanese word for the roe of flying fish; an ingredient with a crunchy texture often used as a coating on luxury sushi. Tobiko offers a wide range of handmade sushi, sashimi and donburi (a rice-based dish with a choice of fish or meat & sauce). Soho designer Margaret Rogers and I chose Seabass donburi (£6.50) and the Executive sushi box (£8.30) accompanied by Soup of the day: Seabass & ginger broth (£3.50) when we visited. These were served with a side dish of Goma wakame (a lightly pickled, dressed mixed seaweed (£2.00))

Everything we sampled was absolutely fresh, crisp and bursting with flavour. Aside from the helpful and enthusiastic staff, particular mention must go to the delicate, fragrant seabass, subtly crunchy seaweed and exquisite vegetables and sushi. This is a meal which not only lingers long on the tastebuds but will also leave you feeling thoroughly energised in the most healthy way. Tobiko predominantly offers a takeaway service although there are a few tables outside and it is most definitely a cut above your average sushi outlet. As an affordable, Japanese restaurant, Tobiko gets our highest recommendation.

When i worked in Leicester Square - i used to love going to this place for lunch - even though the queue was often out of the door (Given the size of the shop that only took about 3 or 4 people though)

Being able to choose exactly what you wanted to eat was great. Or if you werent feeling creative then the pre-made up boxes always have a great variety.

In winter their different soups are fantastic because they're not the heavy creamy or tomato based soups that you usually get in the shops.

Highlights - duck rolls - slightly unusual but the way they do it works (for me at least )

When i'm passing through the area i still stop in to get some lunch there and i'll keep doing it because they're always friendly and happy to make up something if you ask them.
